About us

Lancaster Training Services Ltd (LTS) was founded in December 1968 by a consortium of 10 haulage contractors in conjunction with the Road Transport Industry Training Board. It was then known as Lancaster and District Road Haulage Group Training Association and was one of 72 Group Training Associations set up all over the country. The organisation provided LGV driver training for member companies necessitated by the introduction of LGV driver licensing legislation. In Sept 1979 the organisation became a Limited Company and a registered charity.

In Oct 1982 LTS became a Managing Agent for the Youth Opportunity Programmes funded through the Manpower Services Commission. At that time the local college, Lancaster & Morecambe, was used to provide training and eventual qualifications. However, due to poor results attained by our apprentices it was decided that LTS would commence it’s own In House Training (IHT) in Sept 1991.

In August 2007, LTS moved from Lancaster to a purpose built premises on Penrod Way in Heysham. Our new resources include 3 theory classrooms (all of which are equipped with interactive whiteboards), an I.T. Suite comprising of 15 Dell workstations and 3 colour laser printers and a large, well equipped workshop. The workshop is equiped with 6 Tough Book laptops with diagnostic software, a 10’x10’ projection screen with a short throw projector and a digital video camera. This has transformed the workshop in to an extension of the classrooms.

The IHT department offers training programmes for Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Vehicle Body Repairers and Parts Personnel. The IHT team are responsible for the selection, recruitment, training, assessing, monitoring, general well being etc. of all the young people on Government funded training programmes. All programmes operate on a day release basis e.g. 4 days on-the-job, 1-day off-the-job. Mechanics attend LTS with Body Repairers and Motor Cycle Mechanics attending Blackpool and the Fylde College. Apprentices attend approximately 33 weeks each year for off-the-job training (day release). In September 2007 LTS began delivery of the Young Apprenticeship Programme. This is run in collaboration with Lancaster & Morecambe College and is open to Year 9 learners from local schools. The learners spend three days a week at school, one day in a work placement (sourced by LTS) and one day at LTS. The programme runs for two years and the learners will obtain an IMI Certificate in Vehicle Fitting upon completion.

City & Guilds of London and The Institute of the Motor Industry Awards (IMIA) are the ‘Awarding Bodies’ for all Lancaster Training Services Ltd apprenticeship training programmes. Our Sector Skills Council (SSC) is Automotive Skills.

LTS is currently providing training under contract to the Skills Funding Agency (SFA).
